Autumn is such a great season; all the seeds, berries and spent flowerheads make beautiful subjects for drawing and painting. This detailed painting took me several weeks to complete and by the end, the British winter was drawing in, daylight was low and the weather outside was gusty. These autumnal elements gradually gave me the idea for the swirling flurry of hydrangea petals across the top of the image. It was a risky experiment because the painting was already complicated and it would have been easy to upset the overall balance. Luckily it worked well, and as you might expect, its my favourite aspect of the painting!
